LOCAL COMPANIES WORK TOGETHER TO KEEP CONNECTICUT WARM FOR WINTER
492 coats were collected and cleaned during the first annual coat drive sponsored by DRS and Sal’s
December 16, 2015- Connecticut is known for its ever changing temperatures and climates. With the cost of living rising and many families struggling to make ends meet, many families are having to prioritize what comes first, and with shelter, food, and heat being the top priorities for most, it is often hard for families to find the extra money to afford winter clothing. “I, Dan Siracusa, President, Siracusa Moving and Storage, was made aware by the New Britain school district that on colder days less kids showed up to school. That’s why I started Button Up Connecticut. It’s a company’s responsibility to give back and be merciful to others.”
Button Up Connecticut is an organization that collects coats from various donors and distributes them to those who are in need throughout Connecticut. Over the last 25 years, more than 750,000 coats have been distributed to people across Connecticut. When DRS heard about Button Up Connecticut, we knew it was the perfect way for us to give back. So, we reached out to our clothing restoration partner, Sals Clothing Restoration, and asked if Sal’s would be interested in helping DRS by cleaning all of the coats that we were able to collect. We worked together to reach out to the companies that we work with and scheduled dates for boxes to be dropped off and for the coats to be picked up.
As an initiative for the companies, we offered a first, second, and third place prize. All prizes were bought from Plan International. Olderman & Halihan Insurance from Ansonia came in first place with a total of 49 coats, winning the prize of building a family farm for a family in need. The John Glover Agency in North Haven came in second place with a total of 43 coats, winning the prize of filling a classroom with all of the essential equipment. Third Place was awarded to Anne Coppola’s StateFarm in Ansonia with a total of 33 coats, winning the prize of seeds of hope and mosquito nets for a family in need.
Through working together, we were able to collect and clean 492 coats for Button Up Connecticut to distribute throughout Connecticut. We are thankful for all of the donations that we received and for everyone’s help for this great cause! We will be starting the coat drive again in October of 2016, so please let us know if you have any then.
